Jobs giant Littler takes milestone with 100th global office
Littler Mendelson has opened its 100th location, the labor and jobs giant announced this week, expanding its footprint in Europe as it continues to grow globally.
Reliance | Littler, a collaboration in Belgium that began in 2018 when Littler partnered with Reliance, a work and employment store of 20 lawyers, will open a third Belgian office in Ghent, the firm said on Wednesday. The new office will be headed by partners Edward Carlier and Koen de Bisschop.
“Reaching 100 offices around the world is a clear signal that our expansion strategy and model to meet clients’ global workforce and employment needs resonates with multinational companies,” said Erin Webber, chief executive and chairman of Littler, in a statement.
When Webber joined the firm in 2001, Littler had 200 lawyers. It now has more than 1,400 lawyers in 25 countries, according to its website.
Helping to fuel its international expansion has been Littler’s strategy to combine with other companies using the Swiss verein structure, allowing the constituent companies to operate with a great deal of autonomy in recruiting and finance while taking advantage of the Littler scale. Many of the world’s largest law firms, including DLA Piper, Baker & McKenzie and Dentons, also operate as verees.
“Since partnering with Littler almost three years ago, we have been able to offer our clients personal and local legal advice in the many jurisdictions in which they operate, as well as serve a range of clients doing business in Belgium, ”said Edward Carlier, founding shareholder of Reliance | Littler, in a statement.
Littler partnered with at least three European firms in 2020, most recently with the Spanish firm of 39 lawyers Abdon Pedrajas in November. In December, it gained a foothold in Brazil, which prohibits lawyers employed by foreign firms from practicing there, thanks to a corresponding lawyer partnership with 18-lawyer Chiode Minicucci.
“We’re local businesses,” said Stephan Swinkels, a Littler shareholder who helps lead the development and integration of the company’s global practice alongside Webber. “We go to court every day, our feet in the mud, wherever we are for our clients.”
